Husuni Kubwa
On a small coral island with no quarryable rock but the reef itself, Swahili masons raised a hundred-room palace roofed almost entirely in domes and vaults — a building type with no local precedent — and then walked away from it before the plaster was finished. How did they learn to vault in coral, and why was the largest stone building in sub-Saharan Africa abandoned almost as soon as it was occupied?
